Summer in Tyrol

Sunshine and magnificent long-distance views, away from the hustle and bustle of mass tourism.

Berneck Castle

Berneck Castle is a medieval castle on the eastern side of Kauns at an elevation of 1076m. To the south the castle is built on a rock wall that drops 130 meters into the valley of Faggenback. To the west there is a steep slope which descends to the Kaunertal.

The Castle is of little strategic significance. The castle probably served to protect the main road over the Piller Höhe.

After having many owners, the castle was finally purchased in 1976 by architect Ekkehard Hörmann from Innsbruck who ensured that the castle was renovated between 1977 and 1983. Renovation of the castle chapel was only completed in 1987. This saved the Berneck castle from ruin.

Berneck castle is open in the summer months for visits. Visits with guides take place on Fridays and Saturdays at 10am and 11am.

The tour takes one hour and is only conducted in German. The castle cannot be viewed without a tour guide.

Kaunertal glacier
It is beautiful to ski on the Kaunertal glacier in winter. The glacier is also worth a visit in the summer. The route to the glacier takes you along the Weissee and offers you beautiful views of the glaciers.

At the top it is nice to take a look at a real glacier cleft. Naturally it is cold and damp here so warm clothing is advisable.

Kaunergrat Nature Park

Together with the Kaunertal and Pitztal, Fliess forms the Kaunergrat Nature Park. The nature park is vast with a whopping 5332 hectares, primarily consisting of a typical high mountain landscape.

It is not without reason that the ibex goat feels at home in this region. There are more than 1000 in this area. It is perfectly possible that you will come face to face with these beautiful animals during a walk.

The summer is full of activities: from walking, mountain biking to active mountain climbing. Information and photo points can be found in the nature park and there is something for young and not-so-young visitors!

The Kaunergrat Naturparkhaus was opened in 2007. This is the main building and visitors centre of the Kaunergrat Nature Park. With a museum, restaurant and beautiful panorama terrace this Naturparkhaus is worth a visit.

Sommerberg Fendels

There is much for children to enjoy in the Fendels ski area. You can walk to a small water playground from the parking area at Erlebnishotel Fendels. A lift pass is not required (and therefore free). The top of the mountain will also provide great excitement. At the Sattelklause restaurant there is a large playground with water, climbing frames, trampolines, swings, slides, etc.

A Mountain cart is recommended for the descent. Children up to 10 years can travel in the cart with an adult (€ 8).

Zams/Venet

The Bergbahn Zams/Venet is a wonderful day out when you use the Summercard Gold. The descent from the Bergstation to the Middelstation is a wonderful walk that children will also enjoy. Along the route, there are different activities, but you can also enjoy the beautiful view. The ski lift descends and ascends 2x an hour, on the hour and on the half hour. There is only a stop at the Middelstation on the whole hour. From the Alm Stube mountain restaurant it is only a 20-minute walk to the Middelstation. The descent from the Bergstation to the Alm Stube takes approximately 1- 1.5 hours.

Swimming

The Summercard allows you to swim for free at Freibad Ried (swimming lake) and the Prutz swimming pool.

A visit to the small Schnadiger Weiher swimming lake is also pleasant. It is advisable to travel here by car. Drive to Kaunerberg for this. Turn right in the village. The road turns quite rapidly into a gravel path. Drive on to an open area where you can park. From there, follow the signs in the direction of SchnadigerWeiher. Swimming is fantastic when it has already been warm for a while. When this is not the case, the water can be very cold. Nevertheless, it is a beautiful place to walk.

It is nice to go swimming in QuellAlpin in Feichten on a rainy day. Haus Aifnerspitze Kauns is a partner of QuellAlpin. You will receive a reduction on your entry upon showing your Guest card/ stating that you are a guest at Haus Aifnerspitze.
